“It’s a real pleasure to hear one of the best loved and most iconic themes from Bungie’s Halo Universe in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock,” said Marty O’Donnell, Composer and Audio Director for Bungie Studios. “As longtime fans of the Guitar Hero® franchise, it was great to collaborate with Neversoft and Activision/RedOctane to offer this exciting free download to our fans.”

New Halo Book is New York Times Bestseller !

Posted in News on November 19th, 2007

imagesh31.jpgNew York, NY – Monday, November 19, 2007 - Halo®: Contact Harvest has become a New York Times Bestseller within the first week of sales. The novel, which went on sale nation wide on Tuesday, October 30th , also debuted on USA Today Bestseller List at #23 in the Thursday, November 8 th edition. The new novel is the second of the New York Times bestselling series based on the hugely successful Microsoft and Bungie Studios’ Halo® video games for the Xbox 360 videogame and entertainment system.

Halo: Contact Harvest is written by Joseph Staten, Bungie Studios’ lead writer and one of the original creators of the Halo game trilogy. The book marks Joseph Staten’s first foray into novel writing, but he has served as a writer and cinematics director for Halo (2001) and Halo 2 (2004) and the record-breaking Halo 3.

In Halo: Contact Harvest, Staten reveals the state of the Halo universe leading up to humanity’s devastating first contact with the Covenant —a chance encounter that catapulted mankind into a struggle for its very existence. Readers will experience the start of the Human-Covenant war from the perspective of Staff Sergeant Avery Johnson, Master Chief’s legendary confidant and mentor.   As readers follow the young Sergeant’s adventures, they will gain terrifying insights into both the Covenant’s genocidal fury and the vicious civil war that threatened to destroy humanity’s fledgling interstellar empire, even before the Covenant got their chance.

Halo has emerged from the video game world as a global phenomenon. Its latest installment, Halo 3, garnered more than $300 million in its first week alone, making it the fastest selling video game ever, and one of the most successful entertainment properties ever. With a fully fleshed-out universe of heroes, villains and epic scenarios, the novels expand the universe to give fans a grander view of the game environments and characters they encounter.

To date, over 20 million copies of the games in the Halo trilogy have been sold worldwide. The record week one sales comes on the heels of the previously announced $170 million in sales in the U.S. within the first 24 hours of the game’s release, which marked not just the biggest videogame launch, but the biggest entertainment launch in history. The Xbox 360 title beat previous U.S. sales records set by blockbuster openings for entertainment events like the release of Spider-Man 3 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Additionally, more than 1.7 million copies of Halo 3 were preordered in the United States, making it the fasting pre-selling game in history, surpassing the previous record-setting pre-sales of Halo 2.

Once you do that, visit this website and register using the promotional code XBX7777 along with the serial number on your Xbox 360. All that remains is you waiting for your copy of Halo 3 to arrive in the mail. With the majority of retailers now bundling Xbox 360 consoles with games, it’s really just icing on the cake. Adding a free copy of Halo 3 only makes things sweeter.

Halo 3 gets soundtrack

a_med_vgl_halo_3__jpg.jpg                                                                                                                                                                                            The full soundtrack for Halo 3 will be in shops later this month, which is about as surprising as doing your teeth.

Officially the US will get it on 20th November, while retailer Amazon believes we will have it on 26th November. Microsoft Europe was unavailable to comment, helpfully.

The two-hour soundtrack contains some really rather impressive music from Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori, which has been recorded by a full orchestra and voices of real people who can sing.

It is one of the most memorable scores from one of this year’s biggest games, and we had a chance to talk to O’Donnell about it at the Videogames Live concert held recently as a part of the London Games Festival.

Halo 3 Relates To Suicide Bombers

Posted in Halo 2, Halo 3, News, halo 3 live, halo 3 news on November 7th, 2007

large_halo.jpg                                    In a thought-provoking article, Wired’s Clive Thompson discusses how his lack of skill in Halo 3 has caused him to adopt a kamikaze kill method, musing on how the act is strangely parallel to real life suicide bombing.

Gamers learn quickly to compensate for their weaknesses. If they’re no good at targeting an enemy while running around out in the open, perhaps they adopt the hide and sneak method, avoiding opposition fire until a time when they can pop out and strike. Don’t like a certain gun? Switch to grenades. But what do you do when you just plain suck?

Wired’s Clive Thompson has an interesting take on this precise dilemma in regards to Halo 3 Multiplayer. His solution? Go suicide bomber.

In this intriguing yet fairly succinct read, Thompson details how, when going up against a player in Halo 3 who considerably outmatches him in skill, instead of exhausting his usual fruitless and frustratingly weak defensive tactics, he’s adopted the kamikaze pilot method of racing head on at his opponent with a sticky plasma grenade in hand. While this strategy invariably kills him, the sticky grenade will also kill his opponent.

Thompson goes on to call this tactic “an act of revenge” spurred on by “ritual humiliation” and parallels it to the mentality of a suicide bomber. Why does he justify killing himself in order to take out his enemy? Thompson explains:

I know I’m the underdog; I know I’m probably going to get killed anyway. I am never going to advance up the Halo 3 rankings, because in the political economy of Halo, I’m poor.Specifically, I’m poor in time. The best players have dozens of free hours a week to hone their talents, and I don’t have that luxury. This changes the relative meaning of death for the two of us. For me, dying will not penalize me in the way it penalizes them, because I have almost no chance of improving my state. I might as well take people down with me.

While he places careful caveats to assure that he is not over-simplifying or trivializing the “horrific impact of real-life suicide bombing,” his analysis of the class systems in Halo 3, those who have the resources (time) to perfect their skills and those who don’t, is at the least thought-provoking and relevant:

Or to put it another way: The structure of Xbox Live creates a world composed of two classes — haves and have-nots. And, just as in the real world, some of the disgruntled have-nots are all too willing to toss their lives away — just for the satisfaction of momentarily halting the progress of the haves. Since the game instantly resurrects me, I have no real dread of death in Halo 3.

In short, it’s certainly worth a read below.

Halo sales reach 300 million for Microsoft’s Bill Gates

With Xbox 360 console sales more than doubling and nearly 3 million gamers playing online via XBL, Halo 3 has official become a global phenomenon. Microsoft announced today that Halo 3 raked in $300 million in the first week and became one of the fastest selling video games ever.

Compared with the weekly average before the launch of Halo 3, Xbox 360 sales have doubled giving Microsoft bragging rights as having, quote: “The greatest lineup in the history of video games and the only console where consumers can play all the year’s biggest blockbusters”. These blockbusters that Microsoft are talking about are - of course - Halo 3 along with Madden 08, Mass Effect and Rock Band.

I am unsure as to why they are saying that the Xbox 360 is the only console where you can play these games; granted Mass Effect and Halo 3 are exclusives, but you can play Rock Band on the PS3 and Madden 08 on the GameCube, DS, PC, and the PS3. So that comment is without merit and I think someone either got a little confused or mouthed off before they fully finished the thought process.

Bill Gates had this to say about the $300 million that was pulled in: “Halo is truly a cultural phenomenon, and the launch of Halo 3 is an important milestone for Xbox 360 and for video games as entertainment and as an art form. Halo 3 embodies our vision for the future of entertainment, where some of the world’s greatest creative minds will deliver a new generation of interactive storytelling.”

With XBL members gathering in record numbers to play Halo 3, is not unfounded that the latest installment in the franchise is quickly staking its place as the most popular Xbox LIVE game in history. More than 2.7 million gamers played it in the first week, which represents nearly one-third of the 7 million XBL members worldwide. Within the first day of its launch, Halo 3 players worldwide racked up an unprecedented 3.6 million hours of online gameplay, which increased more than elevenfold to 40 million hours by the end of the first week. That adds up to more than 4,500 years of continuous gameplay. Gamers have also unlocked nearly 30 million achievements and during the first week and hundreds of thousands of new members bought a record number fo XBL Gold Memberships.

Halo 3 was released in 37 countries and 17 languages. To date, more than 20 million copies of the games in the Halo trilogy have been sold worldwide and this news comes on the heels of the original first day combined sales of estimated at $170 million.Looks like Bill Gates will finally be able to purchase his own country, or at the very least his own island paradise.

Full Press Release:

Xbox 360 console sales more than doubled; nearly 3 million gamers play online via Xbox LIVE.
REDMOND, Wash. — Oct. 4, 2007 — Interactive entertainment will never be the same, with the launch of one title that has changed the way the world thinks about video games. “Halo® 3” has captured the attention of consumers worldwide and has made history as one of the biggest entertainment launches of all time.

Microsoft Corp. today announced that “Halo 3” has officially become a global phenomenon, garnering more than $300 million in sales in the first week alone. The critically acclaimed Xbox 360® exclusive, which was released worldwide on Tuesday, Sept. 25, is the fastest-selling video game ever and already one of the most successful entertainment properties in history.

Initial reports from retailers worldwide show console sales have more than doubled compared with the weekly average before the launch of “Halo 3.” With games such as “Halo 3,” “Madden 08” (EA Sports), “Mass Effect” (Microsoft Game Studios) and “Rock Band” (Harmonix), Xbox 360 has the greatest lineup in the history of video games and is the only console where consumers can play all the year’s biggest blockbusters.

“‘Halo’ is truly a cultural phenomenon, and the launch of ‘Halo 3’ is an important milestone for Xbox 360 and for video games as entertainment and as an art form,” said Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft. “‘Halo 3’ embodies our vision for the future of entertainment, where some of the world’s greatest creative minds will deliver a new generation of interactive storytelling.”

“Halo 3” is quickly staking its place as the most popular Xbox LIVE® game in history with members gathering in record numbers to play on the world’s largest online gaming and entertainment network on TV. More than 2.7 million gamers have played “Halo 3” on Xbox LIVE in the first week, representing nearly one-third of the 7 million Xbox LIVE members worldwide. Within the first day of its launch, “Halo 3” players worldwide racked up more than 3.6 million hours of online gameplay, which increased more than elevenfold to 40 million hours by the end of the first week, representing more than 4,500 years of continuous gameplay. Since “Halo 3 launched,” gamers have unlocked nearly 30 million achievements. In its first week alone, “Halo 3” drove a record number of Xbox LIVE Gold Memberships as hundreds of thousands of new members gathered online with friends, family members and other gamers around the world to collectively compete and complete the game.

“Halo 3” is the conclusion to the epic trilogy and picks up where “Halo 2” left off, answering questions about the fates of the beloved protagonist Master Chief™ and his artificial intelligence sidekick Cortana as they struggle to save humankind from destruction at the hands of the alien coalition known as the Covenant. In addition to the rich storyline, “Halo 3” continues the franchise’s grand tradition of delivering innovative online multiplayer experiences via Xbox LIVE. The game’s online multiplayer and innovative four-player cooperative gameplay for Xbox LIVE Gold users, the much-talked-about Saved Films feature that enables players to capture and save their favorite moments on their hard drives, and Forge, an innovative map editor that enables myriad customization options, are just some of the new features gamers are experiencing.

Developed by Bungie Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios, the “Halo” franchise is exclusive to the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system and optimized for the Xbox LIVE online entertainment network. “Halo 3” was released in 37 countries and 17 languages. Record week-one sales come on the heels of the previously announced $170 million in sales in the U.S. within the first 24 hours of the game’s release, which marked not just the biggest video game launch, but the biggest entertainment launch in history. The Xbox 360 title beat previous U.S. sales records set by blockbuster openings for entertainment events such as the release of “Spider-Man 3” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” In addition, more than 1.7 million copies of “Halo 3” were pre-ordered in the United States, making it the fastest pre-selling game in history, surpassing the previous record-setting pre-sales of “Halo 2.”

Almost Nobody asked,

What’s all this about Bungie and Microsoft splitting up?
Bungie Branches Off

As you have no doubt read on the web today, Microsoft Corp. and Bungie Studios, have reached an unprecedented and exciting agreement – starting immediately, Bungie will become an independent company and will retain a long-term publishing agreement with Microsoft Game Studios for “Halo” titles.  The new structure became effective on Oct. 1, 2007.   The official blurb follows, but since you’re a valuable part of our community, we thought we’d sum it up simply and concisely.

Bungie has long been built on creativity, originality and the freedom to pursue ideas. Microsoft agreed, and rather than stifle our imagination, they decided it was in both our best interests to unleash it. We’ll continue to make Xbox 360 games, and we’ll continue to make amazing games for MGS. In that regard, nothing has changed. All that has changed is that now Bungie Studios is once again, the property of the folks of Bungie Studios. Microsoft is and will continue to be, a brilliant, inventive and creatively collaborative publishing partner. Practically speaking, nothing has changed and you guys won’t see much, if any difference, for a while  unless you come to work for us, that is – we’re hiring at http://www.bungie.net/inside/jobs.aspx

The official Press Release is below.

Ask Bungie!

Too many people to list asked,

Why is it my sniper lags, or my melee fails, or blah blah blah…

What you’re seeing is roughly the same situation as you would have in Halo 2, but with movies and screenshots available to examine this stuff, you’re seeing more alleged injustice on a frame by frame basis. The sniper IS harder to use now, so sack up, it requires more skill. The melee attack is more fair, since in cases of true simultaneous attack, the guy with more health wins.

IMABALLPLAYER asks,

Why can’t you rewind in the theater, by just pushing the left trigger. It would have made it a lot easier. Great job on the game by the way!

Also… FIRST!

Because we’re dealing with game data, a bunch of factors mean that it can’t be rewound like video. That’s why we chose Left on the d-pad to skip back a “chapter” in Multiplayer – because the action was more analogous to that feature on a DVD. That function is not available in Campaign at all, since the amount of calculation to do that, and unpredictable loading, made for a lousy player experience. So we cut it. Multiplayer has the Chapter-back function because no loading is required, just resetting of data.

Aquanerd13 asks,

Why do we HAVE to push the direction pad to talk in matchmaking?

Well, you don’t always, but there are a few reasons. One is the endless chatter becomes distracting for some players. More importantly, the amount of bandwidth used for non-stop chat (whether folks are talking or not) is far better allocated to the game. This phenomenon is playlist dependant. For example, Team Slayer 4×4 games have open voice, while Big team Battle requires PTT.

Samadam asks,

Why can’t we skip through saved films using the d pad? I had a matchmaking film and wanted to check to see how the very end of it went down, and I had to fast forward through the entire 9:00 to watch the end.

That’s a limitation (again) of data versus video, however, there is an undocumented feature that makes it easier:

At any time in a Saved Film:

When you are holding down the Right Trigger (doesn’t matter if you are FF or Slo-mo); press Start to pause the game, let off the trigger, then press B to dismiss the Start button menu, and VOILA, the film keeps playing at the speed you were holding the trigger at when you hit Start. This way you don’t have to hold down the Trigger all the way to get to minute 45 of a campaign film to take that screenshot.

Frogwart asks,

How many new maps are under construction?
Will we see these released by the end of the year?
Thanks for the fantastic game!

Plenty.

No announcements have been made yet.

I played the greatest game of Infection yesterday on one of them – a map big enough for crazy vehicle antics, but also unexpected.

SneakySpartan16 asks,

are you gonna bring back lockout to it’s full glory? don’t metion guardian as a replacement because it’s not!

Guardian was never intended to replace Lockout, but it does share approximate scale and game type suitability. Guardian is Guardian.

GruntsofFury asks,

Are you planning to add clans into halo 3? If so any idea on when and if it will be the same setup?

We will not add clan support to Halo 3 beyond the tools Bungie.net enables players to use. However, if Clan support becomes a part of the dash or Xbox Live in the future, then our game will continue to comply with updated Dash features. Caveat: We have no idea if that is happening or not, so don’t read too much into it.

Guyver45 asks,

Is it true that the Flaming Head and Ninja Recon helmet is for Bungie only?

No idea what you’re talking about. Flaming Heads? Nonsense.

TheR3aP3r asks,

Does my rank in social playlist carry over to ranked playlists?

Yes. It is an experience measurement. But that cuts both ways – quitters will be punished everywhere.

Jasonillig asks,

How do we make floating checkpoints in forge? Also can other objetct be made to float?

There are several methods. A simple one is to stack crates atop each other and place the object you wish to float at the top of the stack. Then delete the items beneath – your object will maintain its position.

Mallikas asks,

Why is the social playlist matchmaking so slow?

A number of enhancements are being made to playlists, including minor big fixes which will cause major improvements in matchmaking. Please mind our dust.

POLOFOLKS asks,

Is there a fix in the works for the split screen issue? For most of us it’s killing us to see 2 black bars every time we play with a buddy.

We do that to maintain a proper field of view and aspect ratio on HDTVs. The alternative is a broken Field of View or stretching. One awkward trick you could use is to set your box to 480p and non-widescreen, then let your HDTV stretch the signal. That would be sorta fugly, however.

Westsidekilla asks,

why does team shotty snipers show up so much in team slayer?

It’s an error that’s being fixed very, very shortly. Our apologies.

BlatentB asks,

What happened to the real time reflections on Master Chiefs visor?

Nothing. They’re still in the game engine, but they’re not really much use, and are kind of a waste of CPU, so in many instances, MP for example, we save resources for more important stuff by using cube maps.

Johnrap asks,

Can we play Team Slayer on Sandtrap?

Well obviously you can in customs right now, but it’s not outside the bounds of reason that we could incorporate it into Matchmaking with suitable tweaks.

Silverfoxx903 asks,

Why does the interface seem harder to use in Halo 3 than it was in Halo 2?
Why not have everything in game like in Halo 2?
EX) Having to go to in game dashboard to see a person, see their party, invite them to a game, etc…

The interface is more complex because the game has FAR more features than ever before. We integrate with the excellent Xbox Live and Dashboard features – and one of the compromises there is that some stuff has to happen in the Guide. All in all, there are far more benefits to this system than drawbacks. And we do let you call stuff up with the “Y” button for ease of use.

Mercharcer asks,

Now that MLG has released its rule set, when can we expect to see Team Hardcore in Matchmaking? When Team Hardcore is released will it use the MLG maps also?

The MLG is an independent organization, no relation to Microsoft or Bungie.  MLG uses Halo’s tools to customize maps and modes to suit its playing preferences. Anyone can do the same things as the MLG using those tools. We will of course start to include more competitive game types in matchmaking, but they are not going to  be MLG branded, since the MLG is not Bungie and vice versa. That said, some Bungie dudes may or may not be at the MLG finals in Vegas for giggles.

Maaaxxx asks,

What happened to instant replays you guys were talking about in one of thevidocs?

They’re called Saved Films, they’re chosen from the “Switch Lobby” menu item and just out of curiosity, how did you get this far on the internets?

 BunsenBeaker asks,

Perhaps I have missed it but is the Fuel Rod cannon and incendiary grenades available in Forge?

Yes – but Forge “budgets” are performance dependent, so certain maps can’t use certain weapons and vehicles. If it’s not in the list, it’s not available for that map.

-blam!- Pizza asks,

I remember seeing some screenshots of earlier builds of forge where there were boxes floating in mid air why was this removed?

It wasn’t removed. Try stacking stuff and deleting the stuff beneath it. Also, I know this question was already asked, but I just thought the gamertag was funny. So there you go.

Potsy Uni asks,

Why can’t Bungie let us click the press a thumbstick twice to talk to our team. It would resolve the d-pad issue and let us play better by keeping our fingers on the stick instead of strafing our (bleeps) right off the (bleeping) map.

That’s a terrible idea.

WoopyD asks,

2 QUESTIONS

I was wondering when i get killed by melee why does my body go flying across the map……..

Also why isn’t there a ranked game type with more than 4 people on a team……

Because it is awesome. There will be soon.

Santiago Ox asks,

During Infection games is it possible for players who are infected to assume a Flood physique?

It would make the game type merge with the Halo storyline and be more ominous.
No. That is not possible, although we did consider it ages ago.

Dr. Alisdair asks,

Can you set the gates in High Ground or Last Resort to be open/closed at the start of the game in a forge-modified map or gametype? If so, how?

Not in Forge – the openness of a gate is decided by the Game Type you choose. Objective games, for example, default the gate on High Ground to closed.

Undead Jestar asks,

whats up with the diorama video and the one with the children talking????
i saw none of that in campaign
False advertisement is heresy

How many mails did you send to Fanta complaining about the lack of hot Fantanas in your basement after drinking their delicious sodas?

Broward asks,

When you get hijacked in a vehicle, it seems you are always crouching when you get out, and you have to click the analog stick in to stand up. Is this a glitch, or how you wanted hijacking to work? Thank you for your time!

Do you have toggle crouch turned on? What you describe is weird.

AngelofDeathMG asks,

Is there any way that we will ever be able to play as a grunt? Like a covenant playlist where you could choose to be brute, jackal, grunt, and your start equip based on rank? also, will any classical map be returning?

Nope. We’re only remaking Chiron and we’re doing, night time, daytime and dusk versions of it.

St. DVDA Gundam x asks,

Why can’t we see each player’s individual medal acheivements on B.net when I click on the individual games listed under Game History? We were able to see this on B.net with Halo 2, but now all I can find is all the medals earned by everyone collectively but they aren’t broken down by individuals. This was one of my favorite features of Halo 2. Am I just not looking in the right place? Thanks, DVDA.
Mouse over the avatar to see individual medals.

JGD Live asks,

Will there be any chance of having an option to remove power ups from maps?
The Pit is perfect for my (Team) SWAT variant but I don’t want to have to make copies of maps where I’ve removed power ups, surely this option should be there?

Why is that hard? It takes like, 30 seconds and the map is then neatly organized on your 360.
